Nathaniel B. Weed (1801 - 1876) was the son of John Weed, known as Gentleman John. Gentleman John was a farmer and Speaker of the Connecticut State Legislature. In approximately 1840, Nathaniel B. Weed built a large estate on a site where Stanton and Wilson Ridge Road are today. He, in turn, built this Gatehouse as multi-family living quarters for his caretaker and employees. The Gatehouse was added onto twice during the 1800's as the families grew. The main estate burned to the ground in the early 1900's.
